Why the War in Iran Is a Threat to All of Us
Every day, we are bombarded with headlines escalating tensions in the Middle East:
“Iran War Rages On”…“Rockets Rain Down Across Gulf States”…“Another Explosion in Israel”…
And although it may seem like a world away, the effects of the ongoing war hit close to home. For the countless Jews and Persians across our county, this moment isn’t distant. It’s deeply personal. And for everyday Americans, it represents a very real, and very dangerous threat to our very way of life.
The Roots of US-Israel-Iran War
The current escalation is part of the long-running conflict between Iran and Israel, driven by the Iranian regime’s hostility, its support for extremist proxy groups, and its broader goal of expanding influence across the Middle East.
For decades, we have heard the familiar chants of ‘Death to America’ from the Ayatollahs. We have seen their nuclear facilities in action, working tirelessly towards the demise of the West. And finally, we have seen direct threats such as their long-range missile capacity and sleeper cells inside our own borders.
This isn’t just about power or geopolitics; it’s about ideology. And the extremist leaders of Iran have adopted an ideology of death and destruction towards our country and our way of life. Unfortunately, this ideology isn’t unique in many parts of the Middle East. It’s jihadism, and it’s aimed not just at Jewish values, but Western and American ones.
The Iran-Israel Conflict’s Impact on U.S. Jews
Historically, when violence involving Israel escalates, there is a corresponding rise of antisemitism during war, which seems to exponentiate here in the United States. Jewish individuals, schools, synagogues, and organizations often face increased threats, harassment, and violence.
We don’t need history books or advanced degrees to understand this phenomenon. It’s happening now, as we speak.
How War Fuels Antisemitism
Periods of war often create an environment where misinformation spreads rapidly and where antisemitism can thrive.
We typically see the following patterns:
- Jewish Americans being unfairly blamed for international events
- Anti-Israel rhetoric crossing into antisemitism
- A surge in online hate and real-world incidents
This rise of antisemitism during war makes education and awareness more critical than ever, especially at the community level.
A Powerful Response from the San Diego Jewish Community
In a time as consequential as this, San Diegans everywhere need to unite. Inspiringly, San Diego’s Jewish and Persian communities have done just that, coming together weekly to rally in solidarity with the people of Iran. Demonstrations calling for regime change have taken place on Saturdays at the intersection of Balboa and Genesee in Clairemont.
At these rallies, Israeli flags are proudly displayed alongside Iranian voices calling for freedom, an unmistakable symbol of unity.
As an attendee of these events, Liza Tacher, shared:
“When I attend the Iranian rally, draping my Israeli flag around my neck and letting it fall behind me, I notice many Iranians holding Israeli flags. They recognized me, embraced me, and expressed their gratitude. Their appreciation for Israel and the Jewish people is palpable. It feels beautiful; it is both inspiring and heartwarming.”
This is what solidarity looks like: across cultures, across communities, and across histories. And although this does fill us with hope, we need more than hope these days; we need action.
