(New York City, NY) — StandWithUs applauds the Columbia College Student Council (CCSC) for rejecting a proposal to hold a referendum on whether or not to support divestment, as part of a discriminatory campaign to boycott and isolate Israel on March 10, 2019 The proposal was shot down with a vote of 17 in favor, 20 against, and 1 abstaining.
“A politically diverse coalition of students came together to oppose the discriminatory proposal. They successfully argued that it failed to meet CCSC’s requirement that referendum questions be fairly worded, feasible, and in adherence with the mission and policies of CCSC and Columbia College,” stated Rena Nasar, StandWithUs Managing Director Campus Affairs.
Anti-Israel extremists at Columbia faced public condemnation for the hateful rhetoric they have employed as part of their campaign, and the larger boycott movement was exposed for seeking Israel’s elimination rather than peace and justice for both Israelis and Palestinians. Columbia President Lee Bollinger also reaffirmed his opposition to this campaign of hate.
We congratulate Columbia students on this important victory against hate on their campus. We will continue to work with ICC (Israel on Campus Coalition), Hillel, Aryeh: Columbia Students for Israel and SSI (Students Supporting Israel), and our other partners to empower pro-Israel activism at Columbia and beyond.
