Miami Beach, Florida - September 11, 2024
StandWithUs congratulates Commissioner David Suarez and the City of Miami Beach Council for unanimously passing an ordinance that will bar the city from contracting with parties engaged in boycotts against Israel. The ordinance follows a resolution, which—passed by the council in May 2024 —mandates that recipients of grant agreements acknowledge the city’s adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Working Definition of Antisemitism and commitment to combating antisemitism.
StandWithUs thanks Commissioner David Suarez, city council, and local leaders, including George Lindemann and Joseph Sabag, for helping move this hallmark legislation to fruition. StandWithUs also thanks its partners, IAC for Action and the National Jewish Advocacy Center.
Jordan Cope, StandWithUs Director of Policy Education, observed, “With antisemitism having escalated in cities around the world after October 7, 2023, we are most grateful for proactive initiatives such as this anti-BDS ordinance which remain essential to combating national origin discrimination and the rising tide of anti-Israel sentiment nationwide. This monumental ordinance could not have found a better home than in Miami, which hosts one of America’s largest Jewish communities and one of America’s most diverse population centers. It is my hope that other cities will follow Miami’s lead in promising a safer and more inclusive future for their Jewish and Israeli constituents.”
