StandWithUs Helps Expose Al Jazeera Journalist’s Ties to Hamas

Updated: Aug 3

(Los Angeles, California — August 02, 2024) — On July 31, 2024, Al Jazeera reporter Ismail Al Ghoul was killed in an airstrike west of Gaza City. Many on social media and beyond were quick to glorify him and portray him as an "impartial journalist." StandWithUs helped correct the record by exposing a video that its researchers had since downloaded and catalogued before Ismail Al Ghoul had the chance to remove the video from his Instagram account.

Here video, and video, Al-Ghoul attends a pro-Hamas rally in May 2021, where he expresses his steadfast commitment to Hamas, noting the following:

“How great Gaza is after 11 days of continuous attack. It sends the occupation a message that it [Gaza] is unbreakable. And it sends a message to the resistance that we are on your path ready to offer everything we have for you. It sends a message to the resistance leader Muhammad Deif [Hamas’s then military wing commander] that we are rising up for this resistance and are ready to preserve it with all our blood.”

Others had previously compiled extensive documentation of Al Ghoul's extremism as well and today the IDF added more critical context. According to the IDF Spokesperson, Al Ghoul was a member of Hamas’s Nukhba force that participated in the October 7th massacres. He also reportedly provided instruction to terrorists “on how to film and distribute videos of attacks on Israeli troops.”

“Al Ghoul is now at least the fifth member of Al Jazeera’s Gaza team to have been identified as double dipping for terrorist groups in this war alone," said Jordan Cope, StandWithUs’s Director of Policy Education. "Al Jazeera’s apparent and systemic affiliations to jihadist groups have further tainted its already questionable reporting, which frequently spreads dangerous misinformation and promotes extremism worldwide.”
