(Los Angeles — May 16, 2020 ) — StandWithUs condemns the May 15, 2020 arson attack against the Tomb of Esther and Mordechai, located in Iran. Due to increased violence against Israelis during the celebration of the 72nd birthday of the State of Israel, it is tragically not surprising that similar violence has occurred in Iran given the extremist Islamist regime’s open hostility toward Israel.
This cowardly act was the latest manifestation of the ancient hatred of antisemitism that continues to plague much of the Middle East. There can be little doubt that such treatment of the holy sites of other faiths would be met with extreme outrage and condemnation by leaders around the globe. The same should be true here.
Carly Gammill, director of the StandWithUs Center for Combating Antisemitism stated, “Now more than ever is a time for the Golden Rule to be implemented, and for human kindness to prevail. We stand in solidarity with all Jews who mourn the desecration of this holy site, and call upon others of like mind, including government bodies around the world, to publicly denounce this act.”
