TORONTO, ON (March 3, 2026) – StandWithUs Canada is appalled by the overnight shooting of Temple Emanu-El, a synagogue in Toronto, in a brazen act of intimidation and hatred. The building sustained damage, although no injuries were reported as the building was empty.
“Such an act seeks to instill fear in the heart of the Jewish community, but we will not cower,” said Jesse Primerano, Executive Director at StandWithUs Canada. “The Jewish community is celebrating Purim, a holiday that reminds us of the enduring truth that forces driven by hatred do not prevail. Just as our brothers and sisters in Israel are confronting an evil threat with strength and bravery, so too will we stand firm here at home. We will not allow those who perpetuate hatred to intimidate us or crush our spirit.”
This incident comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, which is steeped in a war against the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, as well as troubling acts of violence closer to home. An Iranian-owned gym in Thornhill, ON was also shot at on Sunday, March 1. These escalating incidents are not isolated; they reflect a wider trend in which communities are being targeted in attempts to intimidate, silence and divide. Such actions undermine public safety, social cohesion and the democratic values that define our country. It is long overdue for our government to take decisive action and enforce stricter measures so that those who would commit such crimes no longer feel emboldened and that our Canadian way of life remains secure and intact.
We thank the Toronto Police Service and its Hate Crime Unit for their swift response and ongoing investigation. We urge authorities to ensure that those responsible are held fully accountable.
