For the local Jewish population in Portland, there’s an avenue to making voices heard. StandWithUs, a nonpartisan group that supports Israel and fights antisemitism, is holding a rally across from the Oregon Convention Center as the National Education Association assembly hosts its annual conference in Portland.
David Smokler, the rally organizer, said how the local output has been in anticipation.
“We have plenty of people (in the Portland area) who are on our mailing list and who are interested in StandWithUs and what we do who are paying attention to what we’re doing,” Smokler said.
“We issued a press release because this is just such an important issue,” Smokler continued. “We want to make sure that people know that this is happening here in Portland this week.”
Smokler also said what the main issues are that his organization will be projecting.
“It’s important that people understand that the teachers unions are getting involved in political issues rather than the things that you’d expect your teachers unions to pay attention to,” Smokler said. “Things like salary, workers conditions, (and) what’s better for students.”
The gathering will start at 4:30pm on Wednesday and go for a planned two hours in a peaceful manner.
