Dan & Keren

About Dan

Dan grew up in Israel, where he attended boarding school, served in the IDF, and studied electrical engineering in college. He moved to the U.S. and built a successful career in technology, working in a technical leadership role at a leading company. Life was busy, and not particularly public or political.

Then October 7th happened — and everything changed.

Dan realized that staying silent was no longer an option. Hoping that the hatred and attacks against the Jewish and Israeli community would just pass wasn’t going to happen. He came to a conclusion: if his three kids are going to grow up in the U.S. proudly carrying their Jewish identity, then it’s his responsibility to fight for that future.

He was never an activist before. But now? He’s all in.

Dan began pulling together like-minded members of the community and created a social media group to share, support, and organize. He started showing up — at city council and school board meetings — to speak up about Jewish concerns and defend Israel against lies and propaganda. He worked to build bridges with other communities and allies. He helped organize rallies in support of Israel and Jewish students.

And when the week is done, you’ll often find him volunteering at the House of Israel in Balboa Park — his favorite place to soak up a positive energy (and maybe sneak a burekas or two).

About Keren

Keren is a freshman at the University of California, Irvine, studying Biological Sciences, and a proud graduate of Mt. Carmel High School. A couple of years ago, she was a typical high schooler — hanging out with friends, stressing over tests, and bickering with her parents.

After October 7th she was this same girl but everything around her shifted.

When she returned to school, Keren noticed something that broke her heart. Walking around campus, she felt alone. While she wore her Star of David loud and proud, others began tucking theirs away. The energy on campus had changed — and it felt like being Jewish had become something to be ashamed of or laughed at.

So she founded Mt. Carmel’s first Jewish Student Union. At first, it was just a handful of students spending lunch together, but it quickly grew. They shared traditions, told their stories, and created a space where being Jewish wasn’t just accepted — it was celebrated. Under Keren’s leadership, students went from hiding their Magen Davids to inviting their non-Jewish friends to share their culture with them.

Then, in her senior year, she turned her focus to a gap in Holocaust education, she had seen for years. She began working with StandWithUs through the Kenneth Leventhal Highschool Internship, and with the help of her advisor she invited Holocaust survivors to share their story on her campus. Keren was stunned when more than 400 students across the school of all different backgrounds showed up to listen and learn from the experiences of the past. Later, she again worked with StandWithUs to bring The Butterfly Project onto campus, an art initiative which honors the 1.5 million children murdered in the Holocaust.

Now, as she begins her journey at UC Irvine, Keren is eager to continue her activism — building connections, amplifying Jewish voices, and making sure every Jewish student knows they are never alone.

Ali and Zach

About Them

Zach Shuman grew up in the San Fernando Valley working as a public account for 30 years. Until high school Zach believed everyone was Jewish. He attended UCLA where he learned that practicing Judaism was a minority religion. Love and pride in Israel were constant companion’s during his lifetime, which reached a  plateau upon his first visit to Israel in 2010. He has served on the board of his temple as well as participated in  numerous non profit organizations.

Ali Shuman relocated to San Diego from Los Angeles to give her children a better quality of public education  and pursue interior design job opportunities in San Diego. She grew up hearing World War 2 stories and holocaust survival stories from her family who had lived in Europe and spent time in and out of bomb shelters. She believes in “Tikkun Olam“  repairing the world, and prioritizes our San Diego community.

Ali and Zach travel to Israel annually and they have a spiritual connection to the county.  They understand that Israel is the holy land for many religions of the world and needs to be shared with all. They are strong Zionists, and are dedicated to correcting the false narratives that circulate within our San Diego community and within the United States.
