AMC, Odeon, and Swedish Cinema Must Apologize and Reconsider Hosting Jewish Film Festival

HELP US:

Join the campaign urging AMC, Odeon Cinemas Group, and Filmstaden to issue a public apology for Filmstaden's refusal to host the local Jewish Film Festival in Malmö and to reconsider hosting the event!

The Jewish International Film Festival in Malmö, Sweden was cancelled after every local cinema— including Filmstaden, Sweden’s largest movie theatre chain—refused to host it, citing so-called “safety concerns.”

Filmstaden is owned by a European company called Odeon Cinemas Group, which is owned by AMC theatres – the largest movie theatre chain in the world.

Filmstaden’s decision is unacceptable. It represents not merely a logistical issue, but a failure of moral courage and civic responsibility. When Jewish art, film, and culture are deemed too “risky” to be shown, it sends a chilling message: that antisemitism and intimidation have succeeded in silencing Jewish voices in public life.

Sweden’s own Culture Minister called this outcome “an absolute disaster for society.” He’s right. No democracy can claim to stand for equality while permitting the exclusion of Jewish culture under the guise of safety.

AMC, Odeon Cinemas Group, and Filmstaden must take responsibility. Their refusal to host the festival was a grave error — one that demands a public apology and a clear commitment to reconsider hosting the Jewish film festival. Anything less will only deepen mistrust and reinforce the idea that antisemitism can dictate cultural policy not just in Sweden, but all over the world.
