Antisemitism in San Diego: What You Can Do

Antisemitism in San Diego: How It Shows Up, and What the Antisemitism Task Force at StandWithUs is Doing About It

Antisemitism doesn’t always announce itself loudly. Sometimes, it’s a swastika etched into a public space. Sometimes, it’s a conspiracy theory shared in a classroom. Or sometimes, it’s a comment, headline, or social media post that feels just subtle enough to ignore, but too familiar to dismiss.

And increasingly, it’s happening right here in our beautiful home of San Diego.

Jew Hate in San Diego: A Growing Reality

For many, San Diego is seen as a place of diversity and inclusion. A community where people from different backgrounds coexist peacefully, and where hate feels like something that happens somewhere else.

But that perception is beginning to fracture.

We are witnessing a rise in antisemitism not just nationally, but locally, across neighborhoods, campuses, and online spaces. What once lived on the fringes is moving closer to the mainstream, often disguised as political commentary, misinformation, or “just asking questions.”

This is what makes antisemitism today more difficult to identify and more dangerous to ignore.

A Deeper Look at What’s Happening in Our Community

To understand what’s happening locally, we have to look at the bigger picture. Recent antisemitism statistics in the US show a sharp increase in incidents year over year, with thousands of reported cases ranging from harassment to vandalism and violence. This broader national trend is reflected at the local level.

In San Diego, antisemitic incidents have included:

Shockingly and most recently, vitriolic statements such as ‘‘Look at all the well-dressed Jews here with money in their pockets” were heard at a local city council meeting.

These antisemitic incidents in San Diego are not isolated; they are part of a larger pattern tied to the broader rise in hate. And when patterns go unaddressed, they become normalized.

At the same time, hate crimes in San Diego continue to be a concern across multiple communities, with antisemitism representing a significant portion of reported religiously-motivated incidents.

When Influence Meets Misinformation

San Diego is also connected to influential voices whose reach extends far beyond the region.

Media personalities like Tucker Carlson, who has ties to San Diego, have been criticized for amplifying narratives that intersect with antisemitic tropes. Similarly, Carrie Prejean, also from the area, has been associated with controversial rhetoric that contributes to a broader climate where intolerance can take root.

This isn’t about politics, it’s about impact.

When influential figures normalize harmful ideas, those ideas spread. They move from media into everyday conversations, shaping perceptions and lowering the threshold for what people are willing to accept.

When Influence Meets Misinformation

The Antisemitism Task Force at StandWithUs San Diego was created in response to this exact moment. As part of a long-term, awareness-driven initiative, the Task Force is working to ensure that antisemitism in San Diego is clearly understood, widely recognized, and actively challenged.

This includes:

  • Educating the public on how modern antisemitism shows up
  • Providing tools and resources to identify and respond to hate
  • Highlighting antisemitic incidents in San Diego to increase awareness
  • Partnering with media and community leaders to strengthen accurate narratives
  • Establishing our group as a trusted authority on antisemitism locally
  • Working with our incredible San Diego Police Department to keep the Jewish community safe
  • Collaborating closely with our interfaith allies

Our work aligns with a broader strategy focused on awareness, education, and sustained visibility, because combating hate requires more than reacting to it. It requires staying ahead of it.
