STANDWITHUS BILLBOARDS IN PORTLAND TO BE PLACED OCTOBER 22
COUNTER ANTI-ISRAEL AD BY STRESSING THAT ISRAEL NEEDS A PARTNER FOR PEACE
(Portland, OR -- October 19, 2012) -- StandWithUs (SWU) is countering anti-Israel billboards on Portland light rail and buses by placing its own pro-Israel ads beginning October 22 for four weeks. The two SWU ads will go up when the anti-Israel campaign ends for a total of 19 posters that stress Israel's quest for peace. The ads specifically counter the recent ad campaign of maps that distort facts. One StandWithUs billboard shows a Palestinian and Israeli boy hugging, reminding viewers that Israel needs a partner for peace and asks the Palestinian Authority to finally accept Israel as a Jewish state and directs viewers to learn more at sayyestopeace, org. The second billboard visually details how Palestinians have said "NO" to Israel's territorial compromise and peace offers repeatedly since 1937. The Israel education organization has countered these map posters in New York's Metro-North in July, 2012 and has a similar campaign in San Francisco Muni buses also beginning October 22.

"We cannot allow the public to be misled by the factual distortions in this anti-Israel campaign. Anti-Israel activists continuously try to undermine American support for Israel with campaigns that misrepresent Israel and its history. These anti-Israel map ads are a shocking distortion of history. As just one example, the message presumes there once was an Arab Palestine, when in fact no such country ever existed," states Roz Rothstein, StandWithUs CEO. "Anti-Israel activists continue to display these negative billboards, which completely absolve the Palestinians of any responsibility for the stalled peace process. The founding of modern Israel was an act of historical justice. The injustice is that Palestinian Arabs have continued to reject all peace offers. StandWithUs is committed to countering these anti-Israel campaigns wherever they appear. In 2010, we allied with other groups to successfully persuade Seattle's Metro Transit to reject proposed billboards with inflammatory, anti-Israel accusations," states Robert Jacobs, director of StandWithUs Northwest. He continues, "our Portland ads focus on Israel's quest for peace and the concessions she has made for it, as opposed to the the anti-Israel ad which distorts history, point fingers only at Israel, and actually makes it more difficult to begin real dialogue that may lead to peaceful coexistence.” "We hope that those who publicize misinformation about Israel understand that every time they do, we will be there to inform the public," affirmed Rothstein.
In July 2012, SWU placed six ads in 75 locations in New York's Metro-North stations to counter posters of maps that misrepresent Israel's history. In September 2011 SWU countered 25 anti-Israel billboards placed in New York City's subway stations with 25 billboards that informed the public that "Israel Needs a Partner for Peace." StandWithUs billboards that displayed the message "Teach Peace, Not Hate" appeared in 2007 and 2009 in Washington, DC, Albuquerque, and Houston (in cooperation with Bridge Houston.) In 2010 SWU countered an anti-Israel billboard campaign in Chicago's transit system stations, and allied with other groups to successfully persuade Seattle's Metro Transit to reject proposed billboards with inflammatory, anti-Israel accusations. SWU countered anti-Israel billboards displayed in San Francisco and Berkeley BART stations and Muni buses five times in 2011-12; in one instance by highlighting Israel's achievements in AIDS research and water conservation. It placed billboards in Denver in April 2012 that promoted the story of "Baby Israela, delivered by Israeli medics in Haiti," and conveyed the message that "Israel Saves Lives." StandWithUs dropped plans to counter anti-Israel billboards in Los Angeles in June 2012 when the billboard company, CBS Outdoor, pulled the anti-Israel billboards after one week because the campaigners misused CBS Outdoor's name.
